1 Dead, 3 Injured After Two Small Planes Collide Near Colorado Airport

One person died and three others were injured after two small aircraft collided midair near Fort Morgan Municipal Airport in northeast Colorado, authorities reported.

The collision involved a Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300, each carrying two people, as both pilots were attempting to land on Sunday morning, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Emergency responders described seeing “black smoke” and “active flames,” with at least one person reportedly trapped in a plane, according to dispatch audio shared on Broadcastify.

CNN affiliate KMGH footage showed one aircraft destroyed beside a runway, surrounded by black ash and fluid.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Facebook that both occupants of the Cessna sustained minor injuries. One occupant of the other plane was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second was hospitalized.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
