Northeast Basic Education School Sports Kicks Off in Yola with Exciting Opening Matches

The 2025 Northeast zonal finals of the Basic Education School Sports (BESS) have commenced in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, with thrilling victories recorded on the opening day.

In the curtain-raiser, the Yobe State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) team overpowered their Borno counterparts with an emphatic 3–0 win. Adamawa SUBEB also began their campaign on a bright note, securing a 3–1 victory over Taraba SUBEB.

The opening matches attracted large crowds of enthusiastic spectators and dignitaries. Among those in attendance were the Acting Chairman of the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB), Dr. Aliyu Sa’ad, and the National Coordinator of School Sports at the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Lydia Gbagi.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Sa’ad emphasized the role of sports in promoting discipline, teamwork, and unity among schoolchildren across the region.

The competition, jointly organized by ADSUBEB in collaboration with UBEC, has drawn participants from all six states of the North-East — Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Borno, and host Adamawa.

Events will run until Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the Federal College of Education Sports Complex, Yola. The young athletes will compete in football, volleyball, and handball, showcasing their talents and fostering regional integration through sports.
