Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has attributed Tuesday’s derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna passenger train to negligence by the relevant authorities.
In a post on his X handle, Sani said passengers had long expressed concerns about the poor condition of the tracks as well as general safety issues along the corridor, but their warnings were repeatedly ignored.
“The Abuja-Kaduna train that derailed today is a direct result of negligence by the authorities concerned. For months, passengers have repeatedly complained about their experience on the track, but were ignored. The expansive bush between Kaduna and Abuja is not a place to be treated lightly,” he wrote.
The train reportedly derailed shortly after departing Abuja around 11 a.m., with several carriages overturned. The incident sparked panic as passengers scrambled to safety amid confusion and fear.
Military personnel were quickly deployed to assist with the evacuation of stranded commuters. However, as of press time, no official statement had been issued regarding the cause of the derailment, injuries, or possible casualties.
Authorities are expected to release a formal report on the incident.
