The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected claims by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, that Nigeria has become a “killing field” under the current administration.
Obi, in a post on his official X handle on Monday, alleged that more than 10,000 lives have been lost to terrorists, bandits, and criminal gangs in the past two years, citing Amnesty International as the source of the figures.
Responding in a statement on Tuesday, Lagos APC spokesperson, Mr. Seye Oladejo, described Obi’s remarks as “baseless and sensationalist,” accusing him of distorting reality for political gain.
“APC utterly rejects and condemns the allegation by Mr. Peter Obi that Nigeria is now a killing field with more than 10,000 deaths under Tinubu’s watch. These sensationalist claims are not only baseless, they are a disgraceful distortion of reality made in bad faith to score political points,” Oladejo said.
He highlighted what he described as significant progress made under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that the Nigerian Armed Forces have recorded notable successes in combating insecurity.
According to Oladejo, the Ministry of Defence midterm report (August 2023 – April 2025) revealed that 9,415 terrorists were neutralised, 3,159 suspects arrested, and 5,449 hostages rescued. A two-year summary from the Defence Headquarters also indicated that 6,260 terrorists were killed, 14,138 arrested, and 5,365 civilians freed from captivity, with over ₦83 billion worth of stolen crude oil recovered.
Breaking down military operations by region, he noted:
North-East (Operation Hadin Kai): 1,246 terrorists killed, 2,467 arrested, and 1,920 civilians rescued.
North-West (Operation Fasan Yamma): 1,374 bandits killed, 2,160 arrested or surrendered, and 3,288 hostages rescued.
Oladejo added that recent airstrikes in Katsina freed 76 hostages, while precision strikes in Borno neutralised 35 militants and restored vital communications.
On military upgrades, he explained that Tinubu’s administration had strengthened the Armed Forces with 24 M346 attack jets, 10 AW109 Trekker helicopters, new tactical vehicles, patrol vessels, and locally produced defence hardware, including over 4.6 million rounds of ammunition and 53 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles (MRAPs).
He also noted that the Coalition for Human Rights and Freedom (CHRF) had commended the military for neutralising over 13,500 terrorists and rescuing nearly 10,000 hostages in coordinated operations.
“The Nigerian Armed Forces, under this administration, are not only standing tall, but they are also striking back aggressively, saving lives and securing our nation,” Oladejo said, adding that Lagos APC stands firmly behind President Tinubu and the country’s military personnel.
The party urged Obi to acknowledge the government’s progress in security matters or “risk being left behind in baseless political dramatics.”
