President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerians living abroad to channel their resources and expertise back home to accelerate national growth and development.
According to Hobnob News, Tinubu made the appeal on Thursday during an interactive session with members of the Nigerian community on the sidelines of the ongoing Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Japan.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President reassured that Nigeria is “on the rise again” under his leadership, emphasizing that his administration is committed to building a nation where citizens can feel the tangible impact of change.
“Leadership is about thinking and doing,” Tinubu said, outlining progress in passport issuance, efforts to reduce medical tourism through improved healthcare infrastructure, and bold steps toward economic transformation.
The President expressed optimism that many Nigerians were already returning home, underscoring that while remaining abroad was a personal choice, the growing opportunities within the country should not be overlooked.
“Yes, for economic reasons, some people might decide to stay away; it’s a fundamental right of the individual, but for the economic growth and opportunity available in Nigeria, don’t stay away,” he advised.
Tinubu further noted that true citizenship extends beyond possession of a Nigerian passport, stressing that commitment to the nation’s progress must also reflect in the character and conduct of its people.
He cautioned against negative portrayals of Nigeria, warning that such narratives hinder development, discourage investment, and undermine vital partnerships needed to drive national progress.
