Kano State Police Command has announced that disciplinary action is being taken against officers seen in a viral video assisting a politician in distributing cash.
The footage showed a red-capped politician in a flowing robe handing out money to youths, with five uniformed police officers helping organise them into a queue.
In a Tuesday statement, spokesperson Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa said the incident occurred on July 10 at the Coronation Hall of the Kano Government House. He clarified that the event was unrelated to the rerun and by-elections held on August 16.
Haruna-Kiyawa described the officers’ actions as “unprofessional,” noting they were deployed to provide security at the ceremony.
“The Kano State Police Command wishes to address the viral video circulating on social media, showing five uniformed police officers assisting a politician in organising members of the public to receive cash,” the statement said.
“Following a thorough investigation, the command confirms the incident occurred after a ceremony at the Coronation Hall of the Kano State Government House on Thursday, 10 July 2025, and is unrelated to the rerun and by-elections held on 16 August 2025.
“The investigation revealed that the officers, deployed for security, were regrettably seen engaging in unprofessional conduct. The command assures the public that appropriate disciplinary measures are being taken to uphold the integrity and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force.
“We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of discipline and ethics while safeguarding public trust and confidence.”
