The Federal Government has rolled out a comprehensive strategy to tackle Nigeria’s long-standing housing deficit, with new projects being delivered under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, disclosed this on Tuesday during the commissioning of the FHA Express View Estate 1 and the FHA Complex in Lugbe, Abuja. He was represented at the event by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Shuaib Belgore.
Dangiwa noted that the initiative goes beyond commissioning buildings, emphasizing that it reflects President Tinubu’s vision to close the housing gap, expand urban growth in an orderly manner, and ensure all Nigerians, regardless of status, have access to safe and affordable homes.
“The Renewed Hope Agenda is real, and through institutions like the FHA, we are bringing that vision to life,” he said.
According to the minister, several ongoing projects—including the Renewed Hope Cities, targeting over 3,000 houses in major cities, and the Renewed Hope Estates across 13 states—are designed to reshape Nigeria’s housing sector. He also revealed plans for a social housing programme aimed at delivering 77,400 units nationwide, with at least 100 houses in each of Nigeria’s 774 local governments.
Dangiwa called for stronger collaboration between the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), private developers, pension funds, mortgage institutions, and cooperatives to deliver sustainable results.
Chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Habitat, Abdulmumin Jibrin, stressed the need to inject more funding into the sector, arguing that Nigeria must reverse the current reality where “houses are chasing money” to one where “money chases houses.”
On his part, FHA Managing Director, Oyetunde Ojo, explained that the FHA’s renewed agenda focuses on affordability, livability, and transparency. He revealed that the FHA has secured lands in 28 states and has begun construction in 17 states under the first phase of the Renewed Hope Estates.
The newly commissioned Express View Estate, he said, will add about 110 housing units upon completion. The project, which began in 2021, is a partnership between the FHA and BAM Properties.
Ojo further disclosed that the Authority has embraced digitalisation to modernize operations, including securing property records on Galaxy Backbone and automating key services. He added that FHA laboratories are now fully operational for geological and structural tests to ensure quality delivery.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of FMBN, Shehu Osidi, highlighted affordability as a key challenge in Nigeria’s housing sector.
“In Nigeria, we have houses we do not need, and we need houses we do not have,” Osidi said. “Many houses are out of reach for low- and medium-income earners, and that is why institutions like FHA and FMBN exist.”
He reaffirmed FMBN’s commitment to providing accessible mortgage financing to Nigerians, enabling gradual homeownership under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
