The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that its recent operation at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was aimed at apprehending internet fraudsters, not targeting the library itself as widely speculated.
According to Hobnob News, the anti-graft agency announced that 23 suspected internet fraudsters will be arraigned today, Friday, August 15, 2025, before Justice D. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos.
The suspects were among 93 individuals arrested during a sting operation at a hotel within the OOPL complex. In a statement posted on its official X account, the EFCC revealed that the arrests followed credible intelligence linking the suspects to crimes such as impersonation, identity theft, and other forms of cyber fraud. Investigations have since indicted most of those detained after profiling and interrogation.
The commission disclosed that the suspects were apprehended during a pool party allegedly organised to celebrate their illicit earnings. The event, originally planned for two other venues, was relocated to the OOPL hotel in an attempt to evade law enforcement surveillance.
EFCC officials stressed that the library facility itself was not under investigation, emphasizing that the operation specifically targeted individuals suspected of online scams. The agency added that some of the suspects have already confessed to their involvement in internet fraud.
The commission noted that the remaining suspects from the Abeokuta raid will be arraigned in subsequent batches.
