MDCN Inducts 101 Babcock Graduates into Medical Profession

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has officially inducted 101 newly graduated medical doctors from the Benjamin Carson Senior College of Health and Medical Sciences, Babcock University, Ilisan Remo, into the medical profession.

The induction ceremony, held at the university’s Amphitheatre, was led by MDCN Registrar, Fatima Kyari, represented by Tijani Ali. Out of the 101 inductees, 32 earned distinctions in various courses, with 24-year-old Chisom Okafor emerging as the best-graduating student, earning 10 distinctions.

Kyari urged the young doctors to remain steadfast in their commitment to humanity, uphold the ethics of the profession, and shun unethical practices. She emphasized that while medicine may not always be financially lucrative, it commands great respect as it deals directly with human lives.

“Integrity must be your watchword,” Kyari said. “Be diligent, show empathy, maintain confidentiality, and seek second opinions when necessary. Respect your colleagues, patients, and the profession’s high standards.”

She also encouraged the doctors to contribute to Nigeria’s healthcare system, even if they pursue further studies abroad.

Babcock University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ademola Tayo, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Philemon Amanze, commended the graduates for their dedication, noting they had been trained with the knowledge, skills, and character to excel globally.

The Provost of the College, Prof. John Sotunsa, stressed the critical role of doctors in national development, stating, “A healthy population is the bedrock of productivity, innovation, and stability. Medical practice is not just a profession—it is a national asset.”

Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, who delivered the keynote address, encouraged the graduates to persevere despite challenges and to innovate in addressing Nigeria’s health issues.

In her valedictory speech, Okafor thanked God, the university, and her parents, promising that she and her colleagues were ready to make meaningful contributions to global healthcare.
