The National Population Commission (NPC) has issued a stern warning against the falsification of its documents, emphasizing that such acts constitute a criminal offense under Nigerian law.
According to Hobnob News, the Federal Commissioner representing Delta State in the NPC, Mrs. Blessyn Brume-Ataguba, made this known during a press briefing in Asaba as part of activities marking the 2025 World Population Day. She stressed that the NPC remains the only legally recognized authority for issuing birth certificates, death certificates, and certificates of notification in Nigeria.
“In other places they charge so much money, but only the NPC offices and the headquarters in Asaba issue certificates,” she clarified.
World Population Day, celebrated this year under the theme “Empowering Young People to Create the Family They Want in a Fair and Hopeful World”, was used as a platform by the commission to advocate for youth empowerment in reproductive health and national planning.
Brume-Ataguba called on both government and private sector stakeholders to recommit to providing supportive environments for young people. “Empowering young people, particularly in making informed reproductive choices, is not just desirable but indispensable to national and state development,” she said.
Also speaking at the event, the Delta State Director of the NPC, Mrs. Jane Ngozi Odigwe, highlighted the critical importance of reliable data for national development. “No nation can make meaningful progress without accurate statistics. The world at large depends on accurate statistics,” she emphasized.
The NPC urged the public to always verify and obtain official documents only through authorized NPC offices to avoid legal consequences and ensure data integrity for national planning.
