The Benue State House of Assembly has passed a resolution recommending the immediate suspension of the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, citing incompetence and disregard for legislative oversight.
The resolution was passed during plenary on Tuesday following a motion moved by Hon. Bemdoo Ipusu, who informed the House that Dr. Adagba had repeatedly refused to appear before an ad-hoc committee investigating alleged irregularities at the board.
Hon. Ipusu further disclosed that the SUBEB Chairman had written to the Assembly, questioning its authority to investigate contract-related activities of the board. According to him, this act amounts to a deliberate obstruction of the House’s constitutional duty to provide oversight on government institutions.
In response, lawmakers across party lines condemned Dr. Adagba’s conduct and expressed deep dissatisfaction with what they described as her “open defiance and administrative incompetence.”
The House unanimously resolved to call on the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, to suspend Dr. Adagba for six months. It also directed the Special Adviser, Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Denen Aondoakaa, to withhold further disbursement of funds to SUBEB pending the outcome of the investigation.
The decision marks a significant step in what lawmakers described as a renewed commitment to transparency and accountability in the management of public institutions in the state.
