Bodo-Bonny Road Hits 80% Completion Mark Despite Torrential Rains — Julius Berger

The Bodo-Bonny Road project, a key infrastructure development in Rivers State, has reached 80% completion, according to construction firm Julius Berger Nigeria Plc. The 35.7-kilometre road, which includes multiple bridges and major linkways, is on track for delivery despite ongoing challenges posed by persistent rainfall in the region.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Julius Berger confirmed steady progress on the project, noting that all major bridges have been “substantially completed,” with only minor finishing work such as pavement joints remaining.

“Despite the challenge, the contractors remained undaunted as their workforce pressed on with determination and grit, hitting milestone progress along the 35.7km road,” the company said.

Project Manager, Tim Nippert, who spoke during a visit to the site between the Nanabie Bridge and Bonny Island, revealed that the final asphalting work was well underway.

“As of now, about 70% of the binder course installation has been completed, while 5.2km of concrete pavement within Bonny Town has also been laid. An additional 5km of asphalt road is 80% completed, awaiting only the wearing course and slope protection,” Nippert explained.

He acknowledged that the relentless rains in July had slowed down certain aspects of construction, particularly the base course installation, but maintained that the project team remains committed to delivering on time.

“It’s all about our ability to persevere and our passion to deliver. Challenges are part of the job,” he said.

Currently, the road remains restricted for construction use only. Nippert clarified that it would not be open to public traffic until full completion, except under critical circumstances.

Julius Berger’s Security Coordinator, Abraham Ikhenoba, also affirmed that the weather has not deterred the pace of work. “Every hand is on deck, and the challenging terrain is nothing new to our team,” he said.

In a show of support from the local leadership, Amaopusenibo Festus Pepple, Secretary of the King Perekule Palace, noted that the road had been temporarily opened during the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the Amanyanabo of Bonny Kingdom in early June. It was closed again on June 15 to allow work to resume uninterrupted.

“The brief opening was to facilitate access for guests attending the celebration. Construction has since resumed to ensure the contractors meet their timelines,” Pepple added.

The Bodo-Bonny Road is a critical infrastructure link designed to connect Bonny Island to the mainland, reduce travel time, and support economic activity in the region.
