The United Nations has officially designated July 7 each year as World Amotekun Day in recognition of the Ondo State chapter of the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as the Amotekun Corps, for its exceptional role in tackling crime across the South-West.
This recognition was announced in a statement released Monday in Akure by Adetunji Adeleye, Commander of Ondo Amotekun and Chairman of the Council of Amotekun Commanders.
According to the statement, Ambassador Dr. Markwili Mgbara, Director of Information and Communications at the International Association of World Peace Advocates, presented the international affiliation certificate at Amotekun’s headquarters in Akure.
The certificate, granted under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) consultative status and the International Association of World Peace Advocates, affirms Amotekun’s affiliation with the UN.
“Ondo Amotekun is the first state-owned security outfit to attain this unique recognition from the UN in the area of life-saving intervention,” the statement said.
It added that Amotekun’s operations are in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global peace and security targets for 2030. The corps was praised for reducing crime, assisting farmers, improving road safety, and safeguarding lives and property in the region.
The statement further revealed that Amotekun will now take part in UN human rights and security forums worldwide, including the UN’s 80th Anniversary event scheduled for September 22, 2025, in New York.
Adeleye dedicated the honour to God and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, crediting the state government for creating the conditions needed for Amotekun’s success. He recalled the security challenges faced at the agency’s inception five years ago when farms were abandoned and businesses shut down.
“Today, with God’s help and strong government support, farmers are back, food insecurity is easing, and economic activities are returning,” he said.
He reassured residents, farmers, and commuters of Amotekun’s continued collaboration with other security agencies to maintain peace. While acknowledging that no society is completely crime-free, he said Ondo State had made significant progress.
