In a major escalation of counterterrorism efforts, Nigerian security forces over the weekend carried out decisive operations in Borno and Niger States, eliminating dozens of terrorists and disrupting insurgent networks in two strategic strongholds.
Precision Airstrikes Cripple ISWAP in Borno
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed the killing of several high-ranking commanders of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in a well-coordinated airstrike on Saturday, July 27, targeting Arina Woje, a notorious ISWAP hideout located in the Southern Tumbuns of Borno State.
According to Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, the mission was conducted under Operation Hadin Kai following credible intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) reports that revealed the regrouping of ISWAP fighters in the area after recent internal clashes.
“The precision strike neutralised key ISWAP commanders and fighters, destroyed multiple insurgent structures, and significantly disrupted logistics and operational planning in the region,” Gabkwet stated.
The operation also uncovered command centres and storage facilities concealed under dense vegetation, reinforcing the importance of ISR-guided air power in modern asymmetric warfare.
Troops, DSS Neutralise 45 Terrorists in Niger State
In a separate but equally strategic engagement, troops of the Nigerian Army, in joint operations with the Department of State Services (DSS) and hybrid forces, successfully neutralised at least 45 terrorists in Iburu village, located in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, on Friday evening.
According to a statement from the DSS, the offensive was launched after intelligence confirmed that dozens of armed terrorists, travelling on motorcycles, were advancing to attack Iburu and surrounding communities.
“A swift response by soldiers and hybrid forces led to a heavy exchange of gunfire. At least 45 terrorists were gunned down, and several of their motorcycles destroyed. Residents reported seeing more than 40 bodies of the assailants scattered in the aftermath,” the DSS noted.
Unfortunately, the battle was not without losses. Two members of the hybrid force were killed in action, while four others sustained serious gunshot wounds and are currently being treated at a public hospital in the state capital.
Renewed Momentum in Counterterrorism
These coordinated strikes reflect renewed momentum in the Federal Government’s war against terrorism and armed banditry, especially in the volatile North-East and North-Central zones. Military officials reiterated their commitment to sustaining pressure on criminal elements through intelligence-led, joint-force strategies.
“We remain resolute in restoring peace to affected communities and denying terrorists freedom of movement across Nigerian soil,” NAF’s Gabkwet said.
