Nigerian Bride Stages Own Kidnap to Repay ₦3.6m Bridal Shower Loan

~Delta Police Arrest Woman and Accomplices in Elaborate Ransom Scheme

In a shocking turn of events, the Delta State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old woman, Merit Eleh, for allegedly staging her own kidnapping to settle a ₦3.6 million loan she had borrowed from her brother to fund an extravagant bridal shower earlier this year.

According to a statement released by the police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, Merit borrowed the large sum in March 2025 to organize her luxurious bridal celebration and cover hotel expenses tied to her wedding festivities. However, when repayment became impossible, she reportedly conspired with two men to fake her abduction, planning to use the ransom payment as a way to clear her debt.

The incident came to light on July 21, when a report was filed regarding the alleged abduction of a woman in the Bonsaac area of Asaba. In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, launched an immediate investigation, assigning the case to CSP Godwin Osadolor, Commander of the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Squad.

“Acting swiftly on intelligence, our team arrested Alfred Elisha at Koka Roundabout and Ugochukwu Adim off DLA Road, both in Asaba, on July 22 around 9:00 a.m.,” SP Edafe revealed.

Under interrogation, the two men confessed that the kidnapping was entirely fabricated. Their confession led to the arrest of the “victim,” Merit Eleh, who admitted she had personally orchestrated the false abduction. She further disclosed that she had collected ₦3 million in ransom, of which she gave her accomplices ₦500,000 and kept ₦2.5 million for herself.

“All suspects involved in the fraudulent act are now in custody, and investigations are ongoing,” Edafe confirmed.

The bizarre case has sparked outrage and ridicule on social media, with many Nigerians expressing disbelief over the extent to which individuals now go to escape financial obligations. Critics have also pointed to the growing societal pressure to stage lavish events, even at the expense of integrity and the law.

This incident adds to a growing list of staged crimes across the country, raising fresh concerns about the intersection of economic desperation, social vanity, and criminal behavior.
