Nationwide Health Crisis Looms as Doctors Set to Embark on Strike Thursday Over Pay Dispute

Medical services across Nigeria may be disrupted starting Thursday, July 25, as the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) prepares for a nationwide strike following the expiration of its 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government.

Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, said the association is poised to embark on industrial action if the government fails to address critical issues affecting the welfare of doctors and the country’s healthcare system.

“We have made our position clear. The ultimatum ends on July 23, and if the Federal Government does not address our demands, we may have no choice but to proceed with a strike,” Prof. Audu said.

Disputed Circular Sparks Uproar

The crisis stems from a controversial circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), which revises allowances for medical and dental officers in the federal public service. The NMA has rejected the circular, citing violations of prior agreements and lack of consultation.

“The circular contains provisions that were not mutually agreed upon and which undermine the remuneration and welfare of medical professionals,” Prof. Audu stated.

“We expect any new directive affecting our members to be the product of proper dialogue.”

Engagement Ongoing — But Time Running Out

Prof. Audu confirmed that the NMA has been engaging with key government stakeholders to resolve the issue. A recent meeting with the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, and other top officials was disrupted due to the national mourning period for late President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Unless a conclusive meeting is held this week involving the Ministry of Finance, NSIWC, and the Ministry of Health, we may be left with no other option but to strike,” he warned.

State Chapters Backing Strike Threat

Backing the national body, the Katsina State branch of the NMA issued a strong-worded communique over the weekend, condemning the NSIWC’s circular and warning of possible service disruptions if demands are not met.

The statement, jointly signed by NMA Katsina Chairman Dr. Muhammadu Sani and Secretary Dr. Yahya Salisu, reads in part:

“NMA Katsina State branch hereby rejects NSIWC’s circular dated 27th June 2025 and demands its immediate withdrawal. Failure to act swiftly may result in disruption of healthcare services.”

What’s at Stake

If implemented, the nationwide strike could paralyze medical services in public hospitals, disrupt patient care, and worsen Nigeria’s ongoing healthcare challenges. The NMA insists the government’s handling of the issue will be critical in determining whether the strike is activated.

“We hope government stakeholders will act swiftly to avoid a full-blown crisis,” Prof. Audu concluded.
