Lagos State is set to make history as the first African city to host the prestigious E1 Championship, the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing series. The announcement was made by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu via his official X account on Sunday.
The landmark event is scheduled to take place on October 4 and 5, 2025, placing Lagos firmly on the map of global sustainable innovation and marine sports.
Recapping his recent experience in Monaco where he attended the E1 Racing Championship, the governor highlighted the groundbreaking potential of clean energy innovations.
“This weekend, we were in Monaco experiencing the E1 Racing Championship. It was a powerful reminder of how innovation, determination, and bold ideas can come together to create something truly transformational,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
The E1 Championship is a cutting-edge marine racing series designed to promote clean energy and environmental sustainability, featuring all-electric powerboats.
Expressing pride in Lagos’ selection as Africa’s inaugural host city, Sanwo-Olu noted,
“This is a major milestone—not just for the sport, but for what it says about our city’s future. Lagos is ready to be part of the global conversation on clean energy, sustainability, and modern marine transportation.”
The governor also emphasized the broader cultural and economic benefits of the event:
“This is more than just racing. It’s a platform to showcase the spirit, culture, and energy of Lagos. It’s a chance to invite the world to experience the richness of our people and the vast potential of our city.”
Sanwo-Olu extended special appreciation to Afreximbank for its strategic partnership and for investing in Team Drogba, led by Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba.
“I’m thankful to Afreximbank for believing in Lagos and supporting this vision. Their investment in Team Drogba is a testament to their commitment to innovation and Africa’s future,” he added.
The governor concluded with optimism, stating that the upcoming championship would mark a defining chapter for Lagos.
“We’re not just hosting a sporting event; we’re positioning Lagos as a beacon of progress and innovation on the global stage. I’m excited for what lies ahead.”
The event is expected to attract international attention, create new economic opportunities, and reinforce Lagos’ position as a hub for green innovation and cultural excellence.
