The Enugu State Government has demolished a Smart Green School located in Mbu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, after structural tests revealed severe construction defects. The move, backed by Governor Peter Mbah, also includes the immediate termination of the contractor’s engagement for delivering substandard work.
Chairman of Isi-Uzo LGA, Barr. Obiora Obeagu, who spoke to journalists over the weekend, confirmed that a state team comprising engineers, project managers, and officials from the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure had inspected the school building on Wednesday, July 16. The team discovered widespread cracks and structural failures, prompting the governor’s directive to bring the compromised structure down.
“This was a clear case of misrepresentation and breach of trust by the contractor,” said Obeagu. “Despite initial warnings and an opportunity to correct the anomalies, the contractor failed to meet the quality expectations of the state government.”
The state, he added, has now taken full control of the project site and is working with ministry engineers to conduct integrity tests on remaining structures to ensure safety before proceeding with further construction.
The demolished school is part of Governor Mbah’s flagship project—the construction of 260 Smart Green Schools and 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres across the state’s 260 political wards.
“This incident sends a clear message: it is no longer business as usual. Any attempt to cut corners will be met with swift consequences,” Obeagu emphasized.
The government’s proactive intervention, he noted, reinforces its zero-tolerance stance on poor workmanship and highlights Governor Mbah’s unwavering commitment to delivering world-class educational infrastructure for the people of Enugu State.
