The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) will on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, present certificates of return to elected chairmen and councillors across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
Chairman of LASIEC, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), confirmed the development during a telephone conversation with Hobnob News, explaining that the ceremony, initially scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed due to the public holiday declared by the Federal Government in honour of late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“It was supposed to hold on Tuesday,” she said. “But due to the public holiday on that day, it has been moved to the next working day, which is Wednesday.”
The Federal Government declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday to observe national mourning following the death of President Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a London hospital. He is scheduled to be buried on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
An official of LASIEC, speaking on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorisation, also confirmed that the presentation ceremony will take place at the commission’s headquarters in Sabo, Yaba, on Wednesday. “All elected local government chairmen and councillors are expected to receive their certificates of return on Wednesday,” the source disclosed.
In the local government elections held on Saturday, July 12, the All Progressives Congress (APC) recorded a landslide victory, securing all 57 chairmanship seats and 375 out of the 376 councillorship positions across the state.
The only exception was in Ward D of Yaba LCDA, where Babatunde Dosunmu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated his APC rival to clinch the lone councillorship seat for the opposition.
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile officially announced the election results on Sunday from the LASIEC headquarters. The commission is now set to formally conclude the process with the issuance of certificates, ushering in the new leadership at the grassroots level.
