The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his death as a monumental loss to the nation.
In a statement signed by the Northern CAN Chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, the association paid tribute to Buhari’s legacy, highlighting his sense of patriotism, discipline, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity and development.
“The passing of Buhari marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political evolution,” Hayab said. “He was a father figure whose leadership left a lasting imprint on the nation’s journey. Though opinions were divided over some of his policies, no one can deny his deep love for Nigeria and his quest for national cohesion.”
According to Hayab, Buhari’s service to the country, first as a military Head of State and later as a democratically elected President, will continue to influence generations of Nigerians. He specifically praised Buhari’s anti-corruption and discipline campaigns, which he said became defining elements of his time in office.
“He launched the ‘War Against Indiscipline and Corruption’ — a campaign that reflected his values and left behind a legacy that future leaders can learn from,” he added.
CAN also extended its heartfelt condolences to the late President’s widow, Aisha Buhari, and the entire family, urging them to draw strength from the legacy of selfless public service Buhari left behind.
According to Hobnob News, Rev. Hayab commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for declaring a national mourning period and dispatching Vice President Kashim Shettima to the United Kingdom to accompany the late president’s remains back to Nigeria.
He further urged Nigerians to honour Buhari’s memory by promoting unity, religious tolerance, and peaceful coexistence across the country. “We must remember him with dignity and gratitude for his sacrifices for the unity and progress of Nigeria,” Hayab stated.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari died at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday in a London clinic after a prolonged illness. In his honour, President Tinubu has directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast across the country.
