India’s Prime Minister Modi Mourns Buhari, Hails Late Nigerian Leader’s Diplomatic Legacy

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has mourned the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a statesman remembered for diplomacy and dedication to India–Nigeria relations.

In a condolence message shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Modi reflected on his meetings with Buhari, praising the late leader’s wisdom, warmth, and commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari. I fondly recall our meetings and conversations on various occasions. His wisdom, warmth, and unwavering commitment to India–Nigeria friendship stood out,” Modi wrote.

He added, “I join the 1.4 billion people of India in extending our heartfelt condolences to his family, the people, and the government of Nigeria.”

Buhari, who died in London at 82 on Sunday, 13 July 2025, served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His remains will be buried in his hometown of Daura on Monday, in accordance with Islamic rites.
