Suspected kidnappers launched a deadly attack on Saturday morning in Nunya, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, killing a soldier and a driver attached to a Chinese construction company.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:21 a.m. on July 12, 2025. About six armed men arrived at the site on three motorcycles, dressed in military camouflage and wielding assault rifles.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants stormed the construction site, opened fire on workers, fatally shooting one of the company’s drivers. A soldier assigned to protect the facility was also killed, and his service rifle was allegedly taken by the attackers before they fled.
Findings indicate the attackers may have crossed from a neighbouring state and are linked to a notorious kidnapping syndicate. Security sources further alleged that the assault was coordinated by a criminal figure with military training, who remains at large.
Security forces launched a prompt response operation in the area. The bodies of the deceased were recovered and taken to a nearby hospital. Spent AK-47 cartridges were reportedly found at the scene.
Following intelligence leads, authorities arrested a suspect with possible ties to the attack at a hideout in Umuahia North Local Government Area. He is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation, while the search for other fleeing suspects continues
