In a decisive move to tackle rising insecurity across Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo has unveiled a new initiative dubbed “Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists.”
The security operation, officially launched on Sunday, comes with the establishment of a Special Security Squad aimed at restoring peace and stability in communities plagued by criminal activity.
According to a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the initiative is a coordinated effort led by the Principal Security Officer (PSO) and Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the Governor, under the strategic direction of the State Government.
Governor Okpebholo, while addressing security stakeholders, reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on violent crimes, vowing to reclaim the state from the grip of criminal elements.
“We will not allow criminality to dictate the future of our state. Edo must be safe again—for our children, for investors, and for citizens in the diaspora eager to return and contribute to development,” he said.
The Governor has placed all security agencies on red alert, directing the full and immediate rollout of the new security framework. He further stressed the importance of accountability, professionalism, and community collaboration in ensuring the success of the operation.
The newly established squad will be composed of carefully profiled recruits, including repentant cultists, local hunters, and community vigilantes, forming localised tactical teams within each Local Government Area. This grassroots approach is designed to enhance rapid response and strengthen local intelligence gathering.
Security experts have lauded the move as a proactive step toward community-led policing and urged sustained support for the initiative from both government and citizens.
Governor Okpebholo has also pledged continued investment in the state’s security architecture, noting that safety and peace are essential to Edo’s socio-economic growth and development.
