A major milestone was achieved this week as key professionals from the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Member States—Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria—gathered in Abidjan to finalize the feasibility and detailed technical design studies for the landmark Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway Project.
According to a statement released by the ECOWAS Commission on Thursday, the high-level meeting brought together representatives from the ECOWAS Transport Directorate, led by Mr. Chris Appiah, as well as officials from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and other prospective financiers.
The gathering, reported by Hobnob News, marked a pivotal step in the preparatory phase of the ambitious 1,028-kilometre six-lane dual carriageway, which will begin in Bingerville, near Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire, and terminate at Eric Moore in Lagos, Nigeria. The corridor will cut across five West African nations and more than 25 major cities.
Described as a transformative infrastructure project, the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway is expected to serve as a vital socio-economic artery in the region. Once completed, it is projected to significantly enhance intra-regional trade, reduce transport costs and travel time, stimulate tourism, and deepen economic integration among ECOWAS Member States.
Officials at the meeting expressed optimism about the project’s potential to reshape West Africa’s transport landscape, improve connectivity, and foster inclusive development. The finalized designs now pave the way for the mobilization of funding and eventual commencement of construction.
The highway project is part of ECOWAS’ broader strategy to improve regional infrastructure and integration, and is backed by multiple development partners, including the AfDB.
