The Igbo Delegates Assembly (IDA) has issued a strong call to action over the escalating attacks on farmers and communities in the South-East region, allegedly perpetrated by violent herdsmen.
In a communiqué released after its second quarterly meeting held in Abuja, the Assembly decried the spate of killings and destruction of livelihoods across Igboland. The statement, signed by its President General, Chief Kenneth Okeugo, urged governors of the South-East states and security agencies to step up efforts in safeguarding the region’s residents and restoring confidence in public safety.
“We frown on the incessant and heinous killings going on in Igboland and other parts of Nigeria by armed gangs and herdsmen who invade and sack towns and villages, leaving innocent citizens dead or displaced,” the group declared. “This disturbing trend persists without adequate response from the agencies tasked with protecting lives and property.”
The IDA also extended heartfelt condolences to victims of the recent devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State, and the mass killings in Yelewata, Benue State. It urged the government to take swift action to support affected communities and develop long-term strategies to mitigate future disasters.
Beyond the immediate security concerns, the Assembly called on Igbo entrepreneurs to drive the economic revitalization of the region by investing in industries and enterprises within the South-East.
“We urge our people to be intentional about redirecting investments into Igboland,” the communiqué stated. “This will not only boost regional development but also create much-needed employment for our youth.”
The IDA commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for efforts so far in tackling insecurity in the region, particularly actions aimed at curbing the menace of unknown gunmen. However, it called for enhanced support and empowerment of the nation’s security architecture to ensure complete eradication of threats to peace, not just in the South-East, but across Nigeria.
In a show of unity, the Assembly reaffirmed its full support for the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and lauded the leadership of Senator John Azuta-Mbata for steering the organization with dedication and purpose.
“We remain solidly aligned with Ohanaeze Ndigbo in promoting the interests of our people at all levels,” Chief Okeugo concluded.
