The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed the commencement of rehabilitation and reconstruction works on the Eastern railway corridor, marking a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to national infrastructure development.
According to the Railway District Manager, Eastern District, Enugu, Mr. Victor Adamu, work has officially started on the Port Harcourt–Aba stretch of the Eastern narrow gauge line, a vital part of the corridor that extends from Port Harcourt in Rivers State to Maiduguri, Borno State.
Speaking in Enugu during a national infrastructure assessment, Adamu revealed that the NRC took over the project segment on November 28, 2024, and has since resumed train operations between Port Harcourt and Aba, running services five days a week.
“The Eastern District covers Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Rivers, and parts of Benue State, up to Egbede. It’s reassuring to see reconstruction underway on this long-abandoned route,” Adamu said.
He acknowledged, however, that work remains suspended on the Aba–Enugu axis, but assured the public that the Federal Government is working tirelessly to resume construction across the full corridor.
Adamu noted that the project has gained momentum under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with additional policies now empowering state governments to invest directly in rail infrastructure.
“Governors from Anambra, Abia, and Enugu have expressed interest in supporting this rail revival. With their collaboration, we’re optimistic that progress will accelerate,” he added.
The NRC official also disclosed that the Managing Director of the corporation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, recently visited Enugu and held strategic meetings with the governors of Abia and Enugu States—discussions that are expected to yield further commitments to the project.
While expressing optimism, Adamu highlighted persistent security concerns, particularly the activities of vandals targeting railway infrastructure.
“Vandalism remains one of our biggest challenges. Track materials and other key installations are being targeted. Fortunately, with the support of the Nigeria Police, NSCDC, military, and local vigilante groups, several suspects have been arrested across Enugu, Rivers, and Imo states, with some already facing trial,” he said.
He called on the public to take ownership of the infrastructure, emphasizing its importance for regional development and national integration.
“These rail facilities are national assets. Protecting them is not just a government responsibility—it’s a civic duty,” Adamu concluded.
Background:
Railway operations in Enugu and parts of the Eastern corridor were halted over two decades ago. The current revitalization project aims to restore transportation efficiency, reduce pressure on roads, and boost economic activities across southeastern and northeastern Nigeria.
