Dr. Umar Tanko Yakasai, Director-General of the Tinubu Support Group (TSG), has dismissed the newly formed opposition coalition targeting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, describing it as “a non-starter.” Speaking in Abuja, he argued that the coalition lacks credibility, claiming its members previously mismanaged the country during their time in power.
Yakasai asserted that Nigerians would not trust these politicians again, citing their alleged involvement in scandals such as the misappropriation of $16 billion for power projects and the Halliburton case. He insisted that Tinubu is focused on cleaning up the damage left behind by PDP-led administrations.
He pointed to the removal of the fuel subsidy and the unification of exchange rates as significant early accomplishments of the Tinubu administration, arguing that these bold reforms are already contributing to economic stability. He urged Nigerians to remain patient, assuring them that the benefits of these policies would become more visible over time, especially with continued support and a possible second term.
Addressing concerns over the rising number of defections to the APC, Yakasai rejected claims of a looming one-party state, noting that democracy permits freedom of association and that defections occur across party lines.
