NiMet Issues Nationwide Thunderstorm and Rain Alert for Three Days Starting Monday

Hobnob News — The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a three-day spell of thunderstorms and rainfall across various parts of the country from Monday through Wednesday, urging residents and institutions to brace for wet weather and take necessary precautions.

According to a weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet projected cloudy skies and intermittent thunderstorms beginning Monday, with northern, central, and southern states all expected to experience varied degrees of precipitation.

Monday Forecast:

The agency anticipates patches of cloud and morning thunderstorms over parts of Taraba and Adamawa states, while Zamfara, Kebbi, and Kaduna will likely experience thunderstorms with rain later in the day.

In the North-Central region, FCT, Kogi, Niger, Benue, Plateau, and Nasarawa are expected to see isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Southern coastal areas including Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa are forecast to witness morning rain showers, with rains spreading to inland areas such as Oyo, Osun, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and Abia later in the day.

Tuesday Forecast:

Sunny skies with cloud patches are expected over the northern states in the morning, followed by moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms in Taraba, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, and Adamawa during the day.

For North-Central Nigeria, partly cloudy conditions will give way to rains in FCT, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Niger. In the South, early morning rain is likely in Cross River, Bayelsa, Delta, and Akwa Ibom, with widespread showers forecast later in Ekiti, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Edo, Rivers, Lagos, and other states.

Wednesday Forecast:

NiMet expects morning thunderstorms across Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, and Kano, followed by intensified rainfall in Sokoto, Taraba, Zamfara, Adamawa, and Kebbi.

The central region, including all North-Central states, will experience cloudy mornings transitioning into evening rain. Similarly, the entire southern region is expected to record light rain showers by evening.

Safety Advisory:

NiMet cautioned the public about strong winds that could precede thunderstorms and advised securing loose objects and avoiding shelter under trees during heavy rain. Drivers are also urged to steer clear of flooded roads, and residents should unplug electrical appliances during storms.

Airline operators are encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather information from NiMet for flight planning.
