The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has officially distanced itself from its 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, declaring that he will not contest the 2027 presidential election under its platform.
In a strongly worded statement released on Saturday, the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, reaffirmed that both Kwankwaso and his political ally, Buba Galadima, remain expelled from the party over alleged anti-party activities.
This statement comes in response to recent remarks by Galadima, who suggested that Kwankwaso would remain in the NNPP and eventually run for the presidency in 2027.
“The NNPP had long expelled Kwankwaso and Galadima. They no longer represent us, nor can they use our platform for any political contest,” Dr. Major stated.
He further clarified that the Memorandum of Understanding between the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, led by Kwankwaso, ended shortly after the 2023 general elections. Dr. Major accused the former Kano governor of attempting to hijack the party structure and identity.
“Kwankwaso led the party into unnecessary litigation, unilaterally altered our party logo to reflect the Kwankwasiyya symbol, and tried to take over our leadership through a convention we do not recognize. It was only through court intervention that INEC restored our original logo.”
Describing Kwankwaso’s ambition to run again on the NNPP platform as unrealistic, Major stated that the party has since moved on and is currently engaging with new aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We will not offer our ticket on a silver platter again — certainly not to someone who violated our trust. Kwankwaso is free to pursue any ambition, but not with us. He should float his own party for that purpose.”
Major also dismissed any comparison between Kwankwaso and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the former as lacking the political credibility and national appeal required for such a contest.
“Kwankwaso does not have the pedigree to match President Tinubu. His ambition is dead on arrival.”
The NNPP reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, insisting that future presidential candidates will only emerge through due process and strict adherence to the party’s constitution.
“We urge Nigerians to ignore any public statements by Kwankwaso or his associates that attempt to link their personal political battles with the NNPP. They no longer speak for this party.”
Dr. Major concluded by reiterating the party’s dedication to constructive engagement and policy-based opposition, stating that the NNPP will not be drawn into unnecessary distractions as it works towards the 2027 elections.
