An Upper Area Court in Ganmo, Kwara State, has ordered the remand of prominent Islamic scholar, Alhaja Kafilat Kaola, at the Oke Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin in connection with a defamation case filed by fellow cleric, Alfa Taofeek Akeugbagold.
Alhaja Kaola, who also runs an Islamic school, was arraigned following allegations of defamation brought against her by Akeugbagold.
At Monday’s hearing, her lawyer urged the court to grant her bail on self-recognition, citing her public standing and assuring she would not flee.
However, the plaintiff’s counsel, Ajasa Ademola, objected, arguing she did not qualify for such consideration under the law, especially due to her alleged involvement in a similar prior incident.
Ajasa supported his objection by presenting a viral video allegedly showing Alhaja Kaola making disparaging remarks about a judge and a lawyer in a previous legal dispute. He referenced legal provisions that deny bail to those who undermine the judiciary and urged the court to remand her.
After reviewing arguments from both sides, the judge ordered her remand at the Oke Kura facility until the next hearing on July 17, 2025.
