The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified that it has not adopted any official stance regarding the emerging 2027 political coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the party’s current focus is on preparations for its forthcoming National Convention, not coalition talks.
This clarification comes amid growing speculation that the PDP had endorsed the coalition movement spearheaded by key political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and ex-Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido. The trio has openly supported the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition, aimed at unifying opposition parties for the next general election.
However, Ologunagba stressed that while some individuals associated with the PDP may have declared support for the coalition, such moves do not reflect the party’s official position.
“The attention of the National Working Committee of PDP has been drawn to a misrepresentative report in a section of the social media claiming that the PDP had directed its members to join the Coalition Group,” Ologunagba stated.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the NWC states in clear terms that the PDP has not taken any official position on the issue of the coalition.”
The PDP, still recovering from the fallout of the 2023 general elections, has faced internal disagreements — most recently over the position of National Secretary, which was resolved in favour of Senator Samuel Anyanwu at its 100th National Executive Committee meeting.
Earlier in April, PDP governors meeting in Ibadan had unanimously agreed that the party would not align with any coalition targeting the 2027 presidency. This was reaffirmed by the PDP National Working Committee, under acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, who emphasised that while the PDP welcomes defectors from other parties, it has no plans to merge or partner with any political group at this time.
Reacting to the participation of some PDP figures in the ADC-led coalition, Damagum warned that the party would take disciplinary action against any member whose conduct appears to undermine the unity and focus of the party.
Meanwhile, Ologunagba reaffirmed the party’s commitment to strengthening its internal structures and rebuilding its support base nationwide.
“Our party is currently working conscientiously towards a successful National Convention, which will further revamp and reposition the PDP for the task ahead,” he said.
Despite ruling out official coalition ties for now, the party reiterated its willingness to engage with like-minded Nigerians in the future to help steer the nation away from what it described as the misrule of the current APC-led administration.
The PDP affirmed its readiness to play a leading opposition role and reclaim power in 2027 through internal reforms and strategic grassroots engagement.
