2027 VP Bid: I’m 100% Loyal to Tinubu’s Decision—Senator Barau Declares

Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has pledged unwavering loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that he would fully support any political decision made by the President regarding the 2027 general elections—including the possibility of being chosen as running mate.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Barau responded to growing calls from political groups advocating for his selection as Tinubu’s running mate in the next presidential election.

“Whatever the President asks me to do, I will do it—100 per cent,” Barau said.

“He is my political father. If he calls on me to work with him, I will simply say, ‘Thank you, sir,’ and I will do it.”

While appreciating the support from various groups, the Kano-born lawmaker emphasized that it is too early to focus on electoral politics, urging all stakeholders to prioritize governance and national development.

“The President is working hard to reposition the country and address the challenges he inherited. Our current priority should be to support his administration. When he succeeds, we all succeed,” he said.

Barau described President Tinubu as a “kind-hearted and open-minded leader,” revealing that the President stood by him during political challenges in Kano, which further deepened his loyalty and admiration for the Commander-in-Chief.

Premature Politics Dismissed

The Deputy Senate President discouraged premature politicking, urging supporters to focus instead on the administration’s success.

“While I appreciate the sentiments of those encouraging me to aim for higher office, I have told them to focus on supporting President Tinubu’s government. The time for politics will come. Now is the time for service,” he said.

Barau reaffirmed his identity as a committed progressive, stating that loyalty and teamwork remain pillars of his political philosophy.

“I am a progressive to the core, and loyalty is something I cherish deeply. I am 100 per cent loyal to Mr President,” he emphasized.

Senate Constitution Review Public Hearings Set

On a separate note, Barau announced that the Senate Committee on Constitution Review is set to hold zonal public hearings across the six geopolitical zones of the country. The hearings will deliberate on 59 constitutional amendment bills and 31 proposals already submitted.

According to Barau, the hearings will provide an opportunity for citizens to submit memoranda and recommendations on the ongoing constitutional reform process.

The zonal hearings are scheduled to take place in the following locations:

South-South (Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom) – chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio or a representative

North-West (Kano) – chaired by Senator Barau Jibrin

South-West (Lagos) – chaired by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele

North-Central (Jos) – chaired by Deputy Senate Leader Lola Ashiru

North-East (Maiduguri) – chaired by Chief Whip Tahir Monguno

South-East (Enugu) – chaired by Deputy Chief Whip Peter Nwebonyi

“We are looking forward to robust citizen participation as we continue the journey toward strengthening our constitutional democracy,” Barau concluded.
