On June 23, 2025, an Israeli airstrike targeted the entrance of Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison, marking a significant escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict. The opposition outlet Iran International reported that the strike appeared designed to blow open the prison gates and potentially enable the escape of political prisoners. This strike is part of a broader Israeli operation aimed at destabilising key regime structures in Tehran, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) headquarters, Basij HQ, and symbolic installations such as the “Destruction of Israel” countdown clock.
Evin Prison is infamous for housing Iran’s political prisoners, including journalists, human rights activists, academics, dual nationals, and government critics. Over the years, it has come to symbolise the repression of dissent in Iran. The prison, heavily fortified and situated in northern Tehran, has been criticised internationally for its inhumane conditions, including torture, solitary confinement, and denial of medical care. Notable inmates have included British-Iranian aid worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi.
According to reports, the airstrike struck the main entrance of the prison, causing structural damage. However, no confirmed prisoner escapes or fatalities have been officially recorded. There are growing concerns about the safety of inmates, as communications from inside the prison remain limited due to internet disruptions and reported mobile network blackouts. Families and human rights groups fear that the bombing, while possibly intended to liberate detainees, may have also put their lives at risk.
Iranian officials have condemned the strike, describing it as an act of aggression and threatening serious consequences. The strike comes amid a wider series of confrontations between Israel and Iran, including Israeli and U.S.-led attacks on Iranian nuclear and military facilities. Analysts see the targeting of Evin Prison not just as a military move but a symbolic attack on the core of Iran’s internal security apparatus.
This development raises the stakes in the already volatile Middle East situation. While it signals Israel’s willingness to strike at the heart of the Iranian regime, it also increases the risk of retaliatory attacks and broader regional conflict. Human rights organisations have called for urgent international attention to ensure the protection of political prisoners who may now face even greater danger following the attack.
