Farmers in Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State are reportedly facing threats from suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group, who have warned them against adopting mechanised farming methods in place of traditional cattle-driven practices.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama reports that the terrorists threatened to execute anyone caught using machines instead of cattle for farming. This warning has sparked fear across affected communities, where many had already begun transitioning to modern techniques due to rampant cattle rustling.
“The terrorists now dictate how we farm,” a local source said. “They forbid machines, yet seize our cattle. We’re farming for both food and trade.”
An intelligence source confirmed that the threats were real and had spread across several villages in Augie LGA. Residents are calling for immediate intervention from the Nigerian military and authorities.
The area has suffered repeated attacks and livestock thefts, allegedly carried out by the same group. In April, 13 vigilantes were killed in Morai village, also in Augie, after suspected Lakurawa gunmen ambushed them during an attempt to recover stolen animals.
When contacted, Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer Nafiu Abubakar said he would look into the matter.
