Senator Abdul-Aziz Abubakar Yari, representing Zamfara West and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Water Resources, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will take decisive action against those behind the recent killings in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
In a statement released on Thursday, Yari condemned the gruesome attack, describing it as a “horrific slaughter of innocent and defenseless citizens.” He assured Nigerians that President Tinubu would not make empty threats and would pursue justice with urgency and resolve.
“The President has demonstrated responsible and responsive leadership by not only identifying with the people of Benue but also taking on-the-spot actions that show he is a hands-on leader,” Yari stated.
He noted that Tinubu’s unplanned visit to Benue State on Wednesday, following the deadly attack by suspected armed herders, was a powerful sign of empathy and commitment to national security.
“He could have sent a high-powered delegation on his behalf, but he chose to be there personally. That gesture alone speaks volumes about his character and leadership,” Yari said.
The senator stressed that Tinubu understands the gravity of his role as Commander-in-Chief and will do everything within his power—even “extreme strategies”—to restore peace across the country.
During his visit, President Tinubu met with survivors and stakeholders at a town hall meeting, vowing to track down and prosecute those responsible for the attack.
“I can assure the people of Benue and Nigerians at large that the perpetrators of this mindless carnage will be brought to justice. The President does not make idle threats. He means business. This madness must end, and it will end,” Yari declared.
He further urged citizens to take ownership of community safety, advocating for what he termed a “whole-of-society” approach to combating insecurity.
“Security is everyone’s business. We must all become intelligence officers in our own right—watching, listening, and reporting anything suspicious. That is how we can collectively defeat this menace,” Yari emphasized.
The senator called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and work hand-in-hand with security agencies by providing timely and actionable intelligence.
“If we are to win this war, we must see national security not just as a government responsibility but as a collective moral obligation,” he said.
The visit to Benue underscores President Tinubu’s renewed pledge to prioritize the protection of lives and properties, as Nigeria continues to grapple with complex security challenges.
