At least 15 people have been killed in fresh attacks by unidentified gunmen in Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas of Plateau State, intensifying fears over the region’s worsening security situation.
The deadly incidents occurred on Thursday night in Tangur community, Bokkos LGA, and Manja community within the Chakfem Kingdom, Mangu LGA. Local sources report that the attackers struck unexpectedly and at different times, leaving residents in shock and panic.
According to Jay FM, the assault on Tangur began around 9 p.m., when many residents were preparing for bed. Armed men reportedly opened fire indiscriminately and stormed homes, resulting in multiple casualties. A similar pattern played out earlier in Manja, where sporadic gunfire and targeted house invasions left several people dead.
Mathias Ibrahim, Director of Culture at the Mwaghavul Development Association and Director of the IDP (Pilot Science) Camp in Mangu, confirmed the killings. “Six persons were killed in the Mangu attack,” Ibrahim stated. “Thirteen more deaths were reported in Bokkos, though full details are still coming in.”
“There is currently tension in the community,” he added, noting that the attacks have left many residents fearful and uncertain about their safety.
Efforts to reach community leaders in Bokkos for comment have so far been unsuccessful, with calls and messages going unanswered as of Friday morning. Similarly, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, had not responded to inquiries by the time this report was filed.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incidents, which mark another tragic chapter in the ongoing spate of violence in Plateau State. The state has witnessed repeated attacks by unidentified gunmen, often resulting in heavy casualties and widespread displacement.
As communities mourn their dead, the renewed violence has sparked fresh calls for urgent government intervention and improved security across the region.
