Enugu Government Confirms Herdsmen Attacks, Arrests Suspected Informants

The Enugu State Government has confirmed recent attacks on farm settlements in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, and announced the arrest of two individuals alleged to have served as informants to militant herders.

The suspects, identified as Matthew Ebeh and an unnamed woman, are accused of leaking security intelligence and aiding the attackers with operational information and local guidance.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Governor Peter Mbah assured residents that Enugu remains one of the safest states in Nigeria, despite attempts by certain quarters to exaggerate isolated incidents.

“Enugu is the most secure city in the country, unarguably — save for people who like to magnify issues and distort facts. The level of security we have achieved appears to be unsettling to some individuals,” the governor stated.

He emphasized the proactive steps taken by his administration to strengthen security across the state, citing major investments in infrastructure and intelligence gathering.

These include the establishment of a Command and Control Centre, deployment of a Distress Response Squad equipped with over 150 patrol vehicles, and installation of AI-powered surveillance cameras across key locations.

The government’s confirmation followed a courtesy visit by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Zone 13, Abayomi Oladipo, who praised the state’s evolving security architecture.

“I commend the Enugu State Government for its unwavering support and collaboration with law enforcement. The improvements in the safety of lives and property are evident,” Oladipo remarked.

The AIG further disclosed that he had received comprehensive briefings from Enugu State Police Commissioner Mamman Giwa and Anambra CP Ikioye Orutugu, and announced new strategic measures to improve synergy among security agencies in tackling crime.

Additionally, he noted that the Enugu Police Command recently arrested two suspected armed robbers and recovered a stolen motorcycle and firearms — a reflection of the state’s commitment to maintaining law and order.

Governor Mbah reaffirmed that his administration will not relent in safeguarding lives and property, and warned that those aiding criminal activity, either as informants or collaborators, will face the full weight of the law.
