Tension is mounting in Edo State following strong opposition from Muslim organisations against Governor Monday Okpebholo’s decision to return eight public schools to the Catholic Mission.
The move has sparked widespread concern among the Muslim community, with two major groups—Edo Muslims for Equity and Good Governance (EMEGG) and the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA)—leading the protest.
In separate statements, the groups expressed deep dissatisfaction with the decision, describing it as a threat to religious balance and inclusivity in the state’s education system. They called on the governor to reconsider the handover, warning that it could marginalize Muslim students and educators in the affected schools.
As tensions rise, stakeholders are urging dialogue to prevent the issue from escalating further and to ensure that the interests of all religious communities in Edo State are respected.
