The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected a notice submitted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding its proposed 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, citing non-compliance with procedural requirements.
In a letter dated June 13, 2025, and addressed to the PDP National Chairman, INEC stated that the notification lacked the required endorsement and failed to meet the standards set by the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.
According to a report by Hobnob News, the letter, signed by INEC’s Acting Secretary, Hajiya Hau’ru Aminu, emphasized that the PDP’s submission did not adhere to Part 2(12)3 of the guidelines. The regulation stipulates that “the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Party shall jointly sign the notice of convention, congress, conference or meeting and submit same to the Commission.”
“The Commission draws your attention that the notice is not in compliance… Be guided,” the letter warned.
The PDP had on May 30, 2025, notified INEC of its plan to hold the milestone NEC meeting at its National Secretariat in Abuja. Although the party met the statutory 21-day notice period, the letter was only signed by the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, without the co-signature of the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
INEC’s rejection raises uncertainty over the scheduling and legitimacy of the anticipated NEC meeting, which was expected to address key internal party matters and strategic plans ahead of future elections.
As of press time, the PDP has not issued an official response to the development.
