Atiku Abubakar Condemns “Senseless” Benue Massacres, Urges Urgent National Response

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the recent wave of deadly attacks in Benue State, describing the killings that reportedly claimed over 200 lives as “senseless” and a stark reminder of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity crisis.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Atiku expressed deep sorrow over what he called a national tragedy, following a series of coordinated assaults on rural communities in the state.

“This assault on innocent Nigerians is not just a local tragedy; it is a national emergency that requires urgent, decisive action,” he said.

Atiku called on both the Federal Government and the Benue State Government to launch a thorough and transparent investigation into the attacks. He stressed the need for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible, and for intensified security efforts to prevent further violence.

“The perpetrators of these heinous crimes must not be allowed to go unpunished. There must be accountability, justice, and stronger protection for our rural communities,” he added.

Highlighting the repeated nature of such violence in the region, Atiku advocated for the deployment of better-equipped security personnel, enhanced intelligence gathering, and proactive strategies to safeguard vulnerable populations.

He also urged authorities to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to the affected communities, including medical aid, trauma counselling, and support to rebuild destroyed homes and livelihoods.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families and communities,” he said. “No words can capture the depth of pain experienced by those who have lost loved ones, homes, and peace of mind.”

The former Vice President emphasized the need for unity among Nigerians in condemning the killings, regardless of ethnic or religious background.

“Let us stand together as a nation in condemning these atrocities. May God console the bereaved, heal our wounded land, and restore peace to our communities,” he concluded.
