President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate implementation of earlier security directives to end the escalating violence in Benue State, following renewed reprisal attacks that claimed numerous lives.
In a statement issued from the State House on Sunday, the President condemned the killings, describing them as “inhuman and anti-progress,” and expressed deep concern over the recurring bloodshed in the region.
“The latest news of wanton killings in Benue State is very depressing. We must not allow this bloodletting to continue unabated. Enough is now enough,” the President said.
To enforce the directive, security operatives including intelligence agencies, the military, and police personnel have been deployed to Benue to take control of operations aimed at restoring peace and stability.
President Tinubu also called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to take proactive steps toward reconciliation by initiating dialogue among farmers, herders, and affected communities. He urged the governor to lead the peace process with statesmanship and urgency.
“This is the time for Governor Alia to act as a statesman and immediately lead the process of dialogue and reconciliation that will bring peace to Benue,” Tinubu stated. “Our people must live in peace, and it is possible when leaders across the divides work together in harmony and differences are identified and addressed with fairness, openness, and justice.”
The President further warned political and community leaders in the state against making unguarded statements or engaging in provocative actions that could inflame tensions and trigger more violence.
“Political and community leaders in Benue State must act responsibly and avoid inflammatory utterances that could further increase tensions and killings,” he said. “They should also rein in those who go out to cause provocations and ignite reprisal attacks.”
President Tinubu emphasized that security agencies have been mandated to act decisively by arresting and prosecuting all perpetrators of violence, regardless of their affiliation.
The statement, signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, reinforces the federal government’s commitment to restoring peace and ensuring justice in the troubled region.
