A Chief Correctional Assistant (CCA) with the Nigerian Correctional Service, Abdullahi Nura, narrowly survived a suicide attempt in the early hours of Wednesday, 11 June 2025, at the Gusau Dam — the largest and deepest dam within the Zamfara State capital.
According to reports, Nura had reported to duty at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Gusau before hiring a commercial motorcyclist to transport him to the dam. Upon arrival, he reportedly jumped into the water in an apparent attempt to take his life for reasons yet to be ascertained.
The motorcyclist promptly raised an alarm, alerting nearby staff and security personnel stationed at the dam site. Nura was rescued from the water and found wearing his official service uniform and carrying his identity card.
The Nigerian Correctional Service was immediately informed, and the State Controller, CCS Musa Tanko, dispatched a response team. The officer was taken to the MSCC medical clinic in Gusau, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Spokesperson for the Zamfara State Command of the Correctional Service, ASC1 Mustapha Abubakar, confirmed the incident, stating that Nura has since regained consciousness and is responding well to medical care.
