The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s Democracy Day, a significant celebration of the country’s 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
In a statement released on behalf of the Federal Government, Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, congratulated Nigerians on the milestone. “June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured,” he said.
As part of the celebrations, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver a presidential address at a special joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
According to a statement by House of Representatives spokesperson Akin Rotimi, the joint session will take place at the House of Representatives Chamber, beginning at 11:00 a.m., with President Tinubu’s arrival scheduled for noon.
Themed “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development”, the event is expected to feature goodwill messages from former National Assembly presiding officers, and the conferment of national honours on selected lawmakers by President Tinubu.
The Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, in an internal memorandum, formally notified members of the event, emphasizing its importance in the nation’s democratic history.
“The joint session symbolizes a moment of national reflection and unity,” the statement said. “It also highlights the National Assembly’s critical role in protecting democratic values, promoting accountability, and driving national development over the past two and a half decades.”
The House urged all Nigerians to mark Democracy Day by renewing their patriotism, embracing unity, and remaining committed to building a prosperous and inclusive Nigeria.
