Sanwo-Olu Unveils Three New Trains, Promises Faster, Smarter Commutes for Lagosians

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unveiled three new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line, marking a major milestone in the state’s efforts to modernize and expand its transportation infrastructure.

The commissioning ceremony took place on Sunday at the National Theatre Station, where the governor announced via his official social media channels that each train set comprises four cars. With these additions, the state has effectively doubled the Blue Line’s current passenger capacity, a development poised to significantly ease the daily commute for thousands of Lagosians.

“Today, I unveiled three new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line at the National Theatre Station,” Sanwo-Olu shared. “Each set includes four cars, and with this addition, we are doubling our current passenger capacity on the Blue Line.”

The upgraded capacity is expected to reduce waiting times, shorten travel durations, and enhance the overall reliability of the urban rail service. The governor emphasized that the long-term goal is to ensure trains operate on 10-minute intervals, creating a faster and more efficient transport experience.

Sanwo-Olu also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for their continued support in facilitating the procurement and timely delivery of the train sets.

Looking ahead, the governor disclosed that additional trains for the LRMT Red Line are expected to arrive before the end of the year. These Red Line units will have twice the capacity of the Blue Line trains, expanding the state’s transport capabilities even further.

“Before the end of the year, we’ll receive new trains for the Red Line which will have twice the capacity of the Blue Line trains,” he said. “Construction on Phase 2 of the Blue Line, which runs from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is also progressing steadily.”

Reaffirming his administration’s dedication to improving urban mobility, Sanwo-Olu concluded, “We’re building infrastructure and a better future for urban mobility in Lagos. And we’re just getting started.”

The new trains mark a critical step forward in delivering on Lagos State’s promise of an integrated, world-class transportation system that meets the needs of a fast-growing metropolis.
