Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle Hails Russia’s Komlichenko, Nigeria Debutant Olusegun After 1-1 Friendly Draw

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has showered praise on standout performers following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Russia in an international friendly played on Friday at the iconic Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

The Malian tactician, speaking during his post-match interview, singled out Russia’s number 9, Nikolay Komlichenko, for his commanding display during the encounter, describing him as the standout player of the evening.

“The Russian team has a lot of good players. I would especially like to mention number 9 – he stood out,” Chelle stated, referring to the Russian striker Komlichenko, who posed a constant threat throughout the game with his physical presence and sharp movement in the attacking third.

Chelle also took a moment to commend Nigeria’s Olakunle Olusegun, who made his senior debut for the Super Eagles during the friendly. The coach praised the forward’s pace and ball control, describing his performance as promising.

“He has many advantages: he is very fast, does not lose the ball, has a strong character,” Chelle said about Olusegun. “But, like any player, he needs to continue working and developing.”

The match itself saw moments of drama and resilience from both sides. Russia took the lead in the 27th minute when Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi mistakenly turned the ball into his own net while attempting to intercept a low cross, giving Valery Karpin’s men an early advantage.

However, Nigeria fought back with determination in the second half. Substitute Tolu Arokodare found the equalizer in the 71st minute, finishing coolly after a slick attacking move from the visitors.

The 1-1 result was a fair reflection of a competitive and engaging match, providing both teams with valuable insights ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

For Chelle, the friendly offered more than just a result—it was an opportunity to assess new talent and gauge the readiness of his squad against a disciplined Russian side.

“We saw good things today, and also areas where we need to improve,” he noted. “But overall, I’m proud of how the team responded after going behind.”

The draw continues Nigeria’s preparation for upcoming qualifiers, while Russia also uses the fixture to test its depth amid its return to more regular international action.

Hobnob News will continue to provide updates on the Super Eagles’ progress as they gear up for future international engagements.
