SHEHU SANI: EL-RUFAI, AMAECHI OWE NIGERIANS AN APOLOGY FOR NATION’S WOES

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has taken a swipe at former Governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi, saying they owe Nigerians a public apology for the country’s current economic and security crises.

Speaking during his Sallah message at his Kaduna residence, Senator Sani criticized the former governors for lamenting about poverty and hardship in the country—problems he said they helped create during their decades in power.

“If El-Rufai and Amaechi are still talking about poverty and hunger in this country, then they must first apologise to Nigerians,” Sani stated. “Since 1999, they’ve both occupied powerful positions. If the country is still in this state, it means they failed.”

He described their recent comments on the economy as “hypocritical,” accusing them of attempting to disassociate themselves from the consequences of their own leadership decisions.

“The poor are suffering. People can’t afford food, school fees, or hospital bills, and yet those who caused this mess are acting like they are mere observers,” he said. “You cannot govern Nigeria for years and turn around to speak as if you were never part of the problem.”

Senator Sani blamed years of policy failure, neglect, and elite misgovernance for the ongoing hunger, unemployment, and insecurity ravaging the country. He condemned what he termed a culture of impunity and selective accountability within the political class.

“Those who held power must accept responsibility. The people deserve sincerity and accountability, not recycled rhetoric,” he added.

While calling for national unity and prayers amid worsening economic and security conditions, Sani expressed hope that with committed reforms and sincere governance, Nigeria could still turn the corner.

“We are in one of the most difficult times in our history. But we must not give up. Let us pray for peace and progress—and most importantly, demand better leadership,” he said.

On the deteriorating security situation in the northern region, the former senator called for collective action against banditry and insurgency, warning that the region is “bleeding.”

“Bandits have displaced millions and killed thousands. We must unite behind all genuine efforts to restore peace,” he urged.

Senator Sani concluded his address with a patriotic call for resilience and vigilance, urging Nigerians not to lose faith in the country despite its challenges.

“Don’t let anyone tell you Nigeria is a scam. Be proud of your country, but be bold enough to demand justice and accountability from those who led us here,” he said.
