WAEC Denies Cancelling May 28 English Language Exam Amid Widespread Confusion

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially debunked claims circulating on social media that the English Language paper, written on May 28, 2025, has been cancelled.

The rebuttal follows days of confusion and growing speculation after the paper, part of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), was marred by severe delays in multiple examination centres across the country. Candidates were reportedly made to wait for hours, with some writing the exam late into the night under torchlight and mobile phone flashlights.

WAEC attributed the disruption to concerns over a potential exam leak. “We received credible hints of a paper compromise and moved swiftly to preserve the integrity of the examination,” the Council said.

However, a fake press release dated Friday, May 30, began circulating online, claiming the English Language exam had been cancelled and a new date would be announced for a resit. In response, Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, issued an official statement yesterday to set the record straight.

“The attention of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has been drawn to a purported press release by the council, spreading across various social media platforms,” the statement read. “The said examination has not been cancelled. The press release being circulated did not emanate from the council.”

Adesina condemned the false report, describing it as the work of “mischief-makers” seeking to cause confusion and panic among candidates.

This clarification comes after WAEC’s Head of National Office, Amos Dangut, acknowledged that some of the delayed exams conducted at night failed to meet the council’s standard protocols.

While WAEC has not yet disclosed further actions regarding the compromised centers, it has reassured candidates that their interests remain a top priority and that all necessary steps are being taken to uphold the examination’s credibility.

Students, parents, and school officials are advised to rely solely on official WAEC communication channels for accurate information regarding the ongoing WASSCE.
