“One Million Is Not Enough” — Shehu Sani Slams Kano Govt Over Compensation to Families of Deceased Athletes

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has publicly criticised the Kano State Government over what he described as “inadequate and unbefitting” compensation given to the families of 22 athletes who tragically lost their lives while representing the state.

According to Hobnob News Nigeria, the Kano State Government had, on Saturday, announced a monetary donation of one million naira to each of the bereaved families. The athletes reportedly died in a motor accident while returning from the National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Reacting to the announcement via a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sani said the sum offered by the government falls far short of what is appropriate, particularly considering the sacrifices made by the athletes in the service of their state.

“One million for each of the deceased athletes is not enough. Kano is rich enough to do more than that. The deceased died in active service,” Sani wrote.

The former lawmaker’s comment has sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians echoing his concerns and calling for more dignified compensation and long-term support for the affected families.

As of press time, the Kano State Government has not responded to the criticism. However, public pressure continues to mount for a review of the compensation package, with calls for the government to honour the memory of the athletes in a more substantial and lasting manner.
