The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday led a high-level inspection of the newly built Kugbo and Mabushi Bus Terminals in Abuja, underscoring the administration’s resolve to modernise public transportation and prioritise commuter safety.
Among those on the inspection team were former governors Samuel Ortom of Benue and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, alongside other dignitaries.
A major feature unveiled during the visit was a sophisticated surveillance system comprising over 40 CCTV cameras strategically positioned across both terminals. These cameras are connected to a central control room that provides real-time monitoring of activities within and around the facilities.
“We’re not just building terminals; we’re delivering smart, secure, and sustainable infrastructure for the FCT,” Wike said. “This is about order, efficiency, and above all, safety.”
The CCTV system is expected to boost passenger security, deter crime, and enhance coordination. Officials say the control room will run around the clock, with trained staff managing transit operations, facility access, and crowd control.
The Kugbo and Mabushi terminals are key to the FCT Administration’s broader strategy to ease traffic congestion and establish a reliable mass transit network. Each terminal includes ticketing points, waiting areas, restrooms, and designated spaces for commercial drivers and traders.
Former Governor Ortom lauded the initiative, saying, “This kind of foresight in public transport is something other states should look to replicate.”
Wike also stressed that the facilities will be properly maintained and operated in line with Abuja’s urban development goals.
The terminals are expected to begin operations in the coming weeks as the FCTA finalises route management systems and personnel deployment.
