Israelis Mark 600 Days Since October 7 Hamas Attack, Demand Release of Remaining Hostages

In a powerful display of unity and remembrance, Israelis across the nation gathered on Wednesday to mark 600 days since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, calling for the immediate release of the 58 hostages still held in Gaza.

At exactly 6:29 a.m.—the time Hamas launched its deadly assault—citizens formed human symbols of hope in various locations nationwide. From the Mediterranean Sea near the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv to the hills of Zichron Yaakov, protesters arranged themselves into striking yellow ribbon formations, spelling out messages such as “Save Them Now,” “58,” and “600” on beaches and open grounds.

In Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, a large human circle formed, with participants wearing yellow shirts and holding yellow balloons. As the digital counter tracking the time since the abductions ticked from 599 to 600 days, the crowd erupted into chants of “Bring them home now!” and released the balloons into the sky.

A massive yellow ribbon was also tied around Jaffa’s historic clock tower in a symbolic gesture of continued solidarity with the hostages and their families.

Demonstrations were also held in Hadera, Holon, Kfar Saba, Nahalal Junction, Modiin, Emek Hefer, and along the northern route from Na’an to Sitriya. In Jerusalem, citizens gathered near the home of Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, who leads Israel’s hostage negotiation team, to pray for the new month and plead for the safe return of the captives.

At 7:10 a.m., outside the Tel Aviv residence of Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, a group of bereaved parents stood silently before one father took the microphone. “Go out on your porch and look at us,” he said, his voice steady. “Our children were killed and assaulted on October 7. For 600 days, you have turned away from us. We won’t let this break us, and we’ll continue to fight.”

Many grieving parents also demanded new elections and criticized the government for failing to launch a state commission of inquiry into the attack and its aftermath.

Hamas, designated as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, the European Union, and several other countries, carried out the October 7 assault, which remains one of the darkest days in recent Israeli history.

Wednesday’s national display of remembrance and resilience made one thing clear: the call to bring the hostages home has only grown louder with time.
